As William Van Meter pointed out in our profile of the Ryan McGinley last year in our Tastemakers issue, the photographer's 2003 debut series The Kids Are Alright "captured the joie de vivre and decadence of millennial New York City -- a lineal passing of the torch from Nan Goldin and David Armstrong. McGinley documented him and his pals puking, partying, fucking, and tagging graffiti." His latest exhibit at Team Gallery, Animals--which runs through June 2--turns his piercing lens on a decidedly different series of naked models of the two- and four-legged variety angle playfully for your gaze.
When asked about how it was working with these "models," McGinley told Marcus Chang on the T magazine blog:
"We used hundreds of boxes of wet wipes because the animals were pooping and peeing everywhere and all over everybody. It's not like I planned any of the photos -- they all pretty much just came about by putting the person and the animal together and letting it organically happen using the body as a landscape, and finding the moment that made sense. I know that I created that moment because I put these elements together but it was still completely out of my power."
