Monday, October 6: New York City kids (or those willing to make the trek to the Big Apple) should head to Terminal 5 to check out Girl in a Coma, the San Antonio-rooted trio who formed an early bond over shared influences Nirvana and the Smiths. (The band is actually named after the Smiths song Girlfriend in a Coma.) Queer bassist Jenn Alva, drummer Phanie Diaz, and Diaz's sis, front woman Nina Diaz, will open for lesbian indie darlings Tegan and Sara, the twin-sister Canadian duo who burst onto the music scene a decade ago, and seem to get better with every album. A portion of the proceeds from tonights performance will benefit Amnesty International -- another reason to check out this gig. Get a taste of Girl in a Comas Clumsy Sky.
Tuesday, October 7: Out today on DVD is Shelter Me, in which director Marco Simon Puccioni explores how a gesture of extreme charity can lead to emotional turmoil. Returning to Italy from a vacation in Morocco, lesbian couple Anna and Mara (Maria de Medeiros and Antonia Liskova) are surprised to discover that Anis, a young Moroccan boy, has stowed away in their car. The two decide to take the boy under their wing and across the border, a decision that ultimately leads to serious drama when Anis falls in love with Mara. See more info and a link to the trailer here.
Wednesday, October 8: Heres something a little different for art connoisseurs (or those looking for a pricey but darling new pad). Venezuela-born contemporary artist David Foote is currently presenting In Residence, an exhibition at the penthouse of 20 PINE The Collection, new residences that bill themselves as a couture concept in lifestyle living and feature interior design by Armani Casa. Now a resident of Brooklyn, the Parsons School of Design grad held his first successful solo unveiling of paintings and portraits earlier this year. His latest show marks Footes foray into contemporary art. The exhibition is available for viewing by appointment only, so for more information contact
Thursday, October 9: Its time for another comedy crossover, this time from Down Under. Catch the series premiere ofKath & Kim, a glammed-up version of the Australian small-screen hit that has been broadcast around the world. The American adaptation, which may be just what the doctor ordered for those suffering from Ab Fab withdrawal, tells the story of a 40-something suburban divorce (Molly Shannon) who lets her newly single and gluttonous daughter (Selma Blair) move back home. The creators and stars of the original ensemble, Gina Riley and Jane Turner, serve as executive producers to ensure that nothing gets lost in translation. Expect big brawls and big hair. Tune in to Kath & Kim at 8:30 PM EST on NBC.
Friday, October 10: Guy Ritchies latest foul-mouthed, men-behaving-very-badly flick RocknRolla hits select theaters today. Starring Gerard Butler, Jeremy Piven, and Tom Hardy playing an honest to goodness gay gangster, the film is a slick blend of sex, drugs, and rock n roll topped off with a heavy, always welcome dash of homoeroticism. And if you're hungry for another helping of Tom Hardy, check Out.com later this month for a profile of the hunky British actor.
Saturday, October 11: If you havent already, hit up the latest from actor-playwright Charles Busch. The Third Story adds another tough-talking dame to his canon, the kind of role Joan Crawford would kill for. But since shes dead, Busch once again dons the wigs and shoulder pads himself, this time to play an unemployed Hollywood screenwriter who recruits her son to help her draft a screwball sci-fi script she hopes will resurrect her career. Visit La Jolla Playhouse for tickets and show times.
Sunday, October 12: Dropping salty rhymes, shameless sexuality, and slyly inspiring mantras over club-stompin synth beats, Tampa-based lesbian rappers Shunda K and Jwl. B (collectively known as the regal Yo Majesty) turn the tables on misogynist hip-hop homophobes everywhere with their riotous debut full-length album Futuristically SpeakingNever Be Afraid (Domino), the follow-up to this summers Kryptonite Pussy EP. Good news: You can finally buy it now.
