Days of Summer

Phillyfest

Monday, July 21: Even as Philadelphias International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival wraps up its run, you still have some gems to catch tonight and tomorrow night. Monday features a French drama called I Dreamt Under the Water about a young man whose love for his band mate sends him into a downward spiral of nightlife escapades in Paris. (You may also appreciate that director Catherine Breillat is not shy about artfully showing skin -- see above.) Or you can catch Straight, the tale of a German street dealer whose secret affair with a bourgeois Jewish boy (who already has a girlfriend) makes for one messy love triangle. Not into subtitles? Catch the super hot Were The World Mine (read Popnography's review here). You can find the full schedule here. Tuesday, July 22:Nico Muhly, the adorably smart and talented contemporary composer and Out 100 alum, releases Mothertongue. A Columbia-educated English major with a masters from Julliard, this New England boy is a post-modern Brian Eno. Hell layer jarring chords over a mezzo-soprano reciting the states in alphabetical order -- and it still comes out beautifully. Listen on MySpace here and then buy it here. You can also try to make sense of Daft PunksElectroma, a feature film about robots who may just be "Human After All" despite their robot community that protests their desires to have a face and skin. Even though theres no Daft Punk music involved, the soundtrack is still littered with gems from the likes of Todd Rundgren and Sebastien Tellier. Check out a teaser here then get it here. Wednesday, July 23: Even though Bravo is loathe to publicize its runaway hit show, you may have heard that a fifth season of Project Runway is underway. We can only wait to see which swishy, diva designers will crash and burn, and which adorable mos well root for every week. (Check out Wesley! So cute!) Feeling nostalgic for season four? Watch winner Christian Sorianos final runway show, as well as those from Rami (above) and Jillian's. They all made it work. Tune in to Bravo tonight at 9pm for the second episode. Thursday, July 24: Any Bostonian hip enough to wear form-fitting jeans is probably scheming to get in on these MGMT shows last night and tonight at the Paradise Rock Club. The catchy psych-rock outfit has been a huge hit amongst the hipster set, or to anyone who has actually listened to the genius Oracular Spectacular. They recorded their full-length debut with Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann and played every major festival across the country this summer. Watch the hypnotic video for Time to Pretend here, the unofficial but awesome video for Kids here, and then get your tickets here. Friday, July 25: That Matthew Goode is one hot ticket. We fell for him in Match Point and now our fantasies have come to life: a whole film in which we are invited to wonder and debate if his character is indeed queer. In Brideshead Revisited, the film version of the Evelyn Waugh book and British television serial drama, Goode and Ben Whishaw (of Perfume fame) portray early 20th century UK uni boys whose intense friendship reeks of homo-potential -- until the sister gets involved and ruins everything. Set in a gorgeous castle, Emma Thompson also delivers a commanding performance in what is sure to be one fabulously intense film. Watch the trailer here. Not into fictional drama? Try real, documented teenage drama. American Teen comes to us from director Nanette Burstein after 10 months of shooting five Warsaw, Indiana graduating high school seniors. The nerd, the jock, the artsy girl, the popular girl and the heartthrob may have something to teach you after all. Watch the trailer here. Saturday, July 26: It's National Cowboy Day, ladies and gentlemen, and who doesn't love a man on a horse in boots, denim and a ten-gallon hat? Queers in or near Sacramento, California are in luck -- this weekend, gay cowboys going to be riding in to save the day. The Sierra Stampede Rodeo bucks off Friday until Sunday. So head on down to the Central Park Horse Arena to cheer on your favorite. Get the details here. Then hit up Sacramento's authentic cowboy and leather bar, The Bolt, and maybe some wayward fella will appreciate your hospitality for the night. Can't make it to Cali? Well, just take a look see at this flawless Texas Monthly modern day cowboy photo spread. Makes you think about taking a horse/road trip, doesn't it? Sunday, July 27: San Francisco is indisputably the queerest of all cities, and occasionally it still goes to great lengths to remind us why. And nothing quite shows it like a street fair full of scantily clad leather daddies. Up Your Alley fills South of Market streets as the big, bearish little brother to September;s slightly less scandalous Folsom Street Fair. Up Your Alley isn't just a street fair -- there's a Saturday night kick-off party at New York Studio, DJs everywhere, and get your chance to meet the Bare Chest Calendar Men at Powerhouse. Consult the website for the full details here.
