Defiance and Attitude: An Exhibition of Queer Art Made in Texas

20071114_art_ed
From October 5th until November 17th, Landmark Arts and the School of Art in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Texas Tech University will present Y Que? Queer Art Made in Texas, curated by prolific artist Harmony Hammond, in the Landmark Gallery of the Art Building. According to Hammond, the show expresses defiance and attitude. Y Que? has a double meaning. One the one hand it implies, Yeah, Im queer, so what? Whats it to you? But it also implies a continuation: and what else? OK, so youre queer, but what else are you? Texan, Chicano/a, African-American, etc. On Friday, October 5 from 6-9 p.m., the gallery will hold an opening reception for the exhibition, which features pieces from 26 Texas artists. The next day, curator Hammond will hold a panel discussion with four of the artists in English Lecture Hall 001 at 10:00 a.m. Harmony Hammond is a significant lesbian artist whose recent solo exhibition, Passages, attracted critical acclaim. She is also the author of the Lambda Literary Awardwinning book Lesbian Art In America: A Contemporary History, which was the first history of lesbian art in the United States.
