No Moore Drama

Mandy01
Mandy Moore has been a busy, busy girl. Out caught up with the actor-singer-songwriterand frequent magazine cover girlto chat about her fashion disasters, outing celebrities, and how she keeps herself out of the tabloids. Youve expressed how embarrassed you are of your past albums, claiming that they consisted of trite music. Dont you think that changes in taste and a desire for autonomy are just part of growing up? Absolutely. And I think Ive been very vocal about it and maybe a little too hard on myself. I think I should cut myself a bit more slack because I was 15, and I really wasnt in any position to have creative control in terms of the music I recorded. I think your taste in music changes, and theres a lot to reflect on as you get older. Do you think Wild Hope is going to be popular enough to get you back on the map as far as your music is concerned? I hope so. I guess the goal is just for as many people to hear the music as possible. Its what Im most passionate about. I hope to take it on the road. Im just honestly glad I was able to make the type of record I wanted to. Is singing and songwriting more than a hobby for you then? Yes, its something Im quite serious about, and I would definitely like it to be part of my profession and career. Do you prefer it to acting? If somebody made me choose between the two, I would say music, but I want to continue them both. You stand apart from other young celebrity starlets like Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and Paris Hilton. How do you think youve managed to avoid making it into the gossip columns? Because Im pretty boring. Nobody cares what happens to me behind closed doors. My personal life is not really scrutinized. Im able to do what I love, and then people leave me alone. Im happy thats the case. You dont think its a liability, something that hurts your career? No. If it is, then so be it. I would rather be allowed to be myself. Its not who I am to be at the opening of every envelope, at clubs, and partying. Thats all fine, but I think theres a way to enjoy your life and have a good time out of the spotlight. Thats what I prefer to do. What are your thoughts on Britney Spears situation? I dont want to comment on somebody else. I think like everybody else. Im supportive and hope she gets it all together. I have faith that she will, but I think everybodys sort of rooting for her too. You went from playing a pious, sweet girl in A Walk to Remember to play a caricature of a pious girl in Saved! Do you think that upset your more conservative fans? Im not sure. Maybe, but it was so tongue-in-cheek, and I think if people dont have a sense of humor, its not really our fault. I guess when we were all making that movie we assumed that it wasnt going to be everyones cup of tea. I was OK with it. Im really proud of that movie. A few years ago you were rather upset when Details claimed that you were one of Hollywoods secret Republicans. Do you consider yourself very political, or do you prefer to steer clear of the topic? I prefer to steer clear of the topic, but Im definitely not a Republican. Why do you think that was reported? I think people have this misperception of me because of the roles I played in A Walk to Remember and even from Saved! They assume Im deeply religious. I had performed at the White House once and performed at this Christmas special that the Bushes attended. I think they put all these puzzle pieces together and assumed that I was a Republican. It happened around the time of the election. I was like, I was just at John Kerrys benefit. How does that make sense? But it wasnt a huge deal, which was fine with me. Speaking of political beliefs and religious beliefs, Im curious if you have an opinion on celebrity outing. If journalists can ask celebrities about religious beliefs and political stances, do you think they can ask them about sexual orientation? I dont think so. I think its entirely inappropriate. I mean, if somebody wants to talk about it, thats fine, but nobody should have to be forced to come out, you know? Do you know a lot of closeted actors? I dont, personally. I just dont think its fair to discuss anybodys personal life unless they want to. What was it like working with Robin Williams in License to Wed? Hes awesome. Hes such a pleasure and definitely keeps you on your toes as an actor. What can we expect from the film Dedication?Dedication is just this little gem of a movie that was bought at Sundance. Its a darker role for me, and its something Im quite proud of. Do you think it was a challenging role? I think production was a challenge because we shot a lot outside in winter. It was a tiny indie, and there was no budget and no trailers, so we were hopping around the city, but I enjoyed myself there. I loved that experience. Youre considered a pop star. Who was your childhood pop star crush? Joey McIntyre from New Kids on the Block. Why Joey McIntyre? I was 6 and had his Barbie doll. I had New Kids on the Block sheets, the lunch box, everything. And then my parents denied me permission to go to the concert when I was 6 or 7. They wouldnt take me, and I was just devastated. I liked him because he was the one that had the rat tail. Speaking of rat tails, whats your most regretted fashion choice? My first ever walk down a red carpet, I wore this disgusting pink sweater with crystals on itand a gigantic plaid ball gown skirt that had baby pink in it that matched the sweater. It was the most hideous thing, and I matched my eye shadow. It was lime green eye shadow that picked up another color that was in the plaid in the skirt. It was just atrociousbut I felt like a superstar. Do you remember what the event was? It was the Billboard Awards. It was terrible. It sounds pretty bad. Whats your vision of hell? Im pretty boring. It would be stuck in traffic on a Friday afternoon. Stuck on the 405 in bumper-to-bumper traffic. I read thats the only time you lose your cool. I hate traffic. It makes me pull my hair out. I get stressed out. I dont get terrible road rage, but my temper definitely comes out a little bit when Im stuck in traffic. What will it read on your tombstone? Here lies a bad late-90s pop star. Who wouldve thought shed get past 'Candy'?
