JULY 16: Audiophiles can get their fair share of ear candy as acclaimed goth-folk outlet the Decembrists team up with Brooklyn-based folk-psychedelic group Grizzly Bear (led by queer front man Edward Droste) at SummerStage. The action takes place at a benefit concert in New York Citys Central Park (see SummerStage.org). Meanwhile, horror buffs shouldnt miss director Sam Zalutskys new Edgar Allan Poeinspired bone chiller, You Belong to Me, which tells the story of a gay man who moves into a haunted apartment. The flick screens at Los Angeless Outfest. Tiptoe over to Outfest.org for tickets. JULY 17: We hear its a little cooler across the Atlantic these days, so make the trek over to Frances 61st Festival dAvignon, where churches, stone quarries, and cloisters host more than 40 contemporary dramatic productions this summer. The lineup includes director Guy Cassierss Mefisto For Ever, a theater-video show that tackles the life of a man carried away by the torment of Nazism and hunts out that part of the devil which lurks inside each person, exploring the political role of the artist. Yeah, its heavy and in Flemish, but the subtitles should help. Get the details at Festival-Avignon.com The event runs through July 27. JULY 18: So you missed Debbie Harry in the True Colors tour last month? No excuse not to pay tribute to the blond punk icon at home. Its Blondie and Debbie Harry Monthyes, were seriousso dust off that crackly Parallel Lines LP and relish the halcyon days when Heart of Glass ruled the dance floor. Or dart over to Manchester, England, where the group is performing at the Apollo. One way or another, embrace the rapture. (OK, enough puns.) Get tix at Blondie.net. JULY 19: Franco Dragones musical adaptation of George Bizets 1875 melodrama, Carmen, is set to hit London and New York in the coming months, but you can catch it now at San Diegos La Jolla Playhouse in the Mandell Weiss Theatre. The music: a pop-infused score by composer John Ewbank. The fight scenes: vivacious dance numbers. The story: a femme fatales private struggleand one that puts the Lindsay and Paris fiascoes to shame. LaJollaPlayhouse.org has the scoop. JULY 20: Its the battle of the purple blockbuster, as Adam Sandler goes queer in the gay-marriage comedy, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and John Travolta dons dragand a fat suitin the movie-turned-musical-turned-movie-musical Hairspray. Or you could just slobber over Chris Evans in Danny Boyles apocalyptic sci-fi flick, Sunshine. All open. JULY 21: Billboard magazine describes performances from New Yorkbased, four-man band So Percussion as astonishing and entrancing. Quirky surrealist electronica duo Matmos racked up plaudits last year with their album The Rose Has Teeth in the Mouth of a Beast, which featured acts like Bjrk and Antony. Now the two experimental groups join forces at the New York Citys Lincoln Center Festival for a two nightonly event. Considering theyve already incorporated turning bible pages, duct tape, and liposuction surgery into their music, we cant wait to see what the guys whip up this time. For more info, check out LincolnCenter.org. JULY 22: Celebrating its 13th anniversary, the Fire Island Dance Festivala fundraiser to fight AIDSflaunts an impressive program this year. Whoopi Goldberg hosts Saturday, June 21, while Phylicia Rashad (yes, Mrs. Huxtable, herself) and Tony nominee Michael McElroy take the reins Sunday. Throw in a little tap, some acrobatics, and a heap load of heavy-duty shimmying, and you got a great party for a good cause. Get tickets here.
