The Golden Gays!

Globes_meyers
Vanity Fair kicked off the Golden Globe parties on Friday night in Los Angeles with a party in honor of Catherine Deneuve, celebrating the French beautys selection as Beauty Icon 3 by MAC Cosmetics. The fete, held at the Chateau Marmont, attracted celebs like Maria Bello, Selma Blair, Zooey Deschanel, Justin Kirk, Anne Heche, Adam Goldberg, Jeff Daniels, Amy Smart, Ali Larter, Kelly Lynch, and Vogues Anna Wintour, as well as Vanity Fairs Graydon Carter and Krista Smith. We cornered Junebugs delightful Amy Adams, whom we first met on the set of Psycho Beach Party, for a little gushing. I love me my gays, she cooed. Hey, I came from dinner theater! And we could just eat her up! Naturally, much of the Globes fun begins after the awards. As we walked through the lobby of the Beverly Hilton (where the awards and party are held) past such stars as winner Geena Davis and Prison Breaks Wentworth Miller, we overheard someone ask Sarah Jessica Parker, who had hubby Matthew Broderick in tow, what party she was hitting. We have a flight to catch! replied Parker, who was eager to get home to see her son. The obvious first stop on our party plan was the fantastic Universal/Focus/NBC/TV Guide party. With Brokebacks four wins, we had to go congratulate our peeps. Luckily we not only got to say hello to Globe winner Larry McMurtry, who coscripted Brokeback, we also got him to the party! McMurtry and his power agent, Adam Shulman, were heading in the wrong direction before we turned them around toward the Uni-Bash, held on top of the Beverly Hiltons parking garage in a gigantic tent. In what was one of the more awkward moments of the night, Cillian Murphy, a nominee for playing drag queen Kitten in Breakfast on Pluto, was stopped by security before entering the party and told he had to go check in. (More awkward was the adorable lad having to tell photographers how to pronounce his name, which sounds like Killian not Sillian.) Winner Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, looking super sexy, we have to say, waited patiently in line for the elevators to the party, while others tried to push ahead and cut in line. (Cmon, people, if someone holding a statue is waiting in line, you can too.) After grabbing a cocktail at the large circular bar conveniently placed at the center of the roomeasy access from any directionwe ran into Brokebacks Anne Hathaway, who was still glowing from all the excitement. How could you not have fun? she asked us. What surprised her most? Everyone is so much thinner than I thought theyd be! she cracked. I need to go to the gym tomorrow. Hardlythe actress, who will next be seen in The Devil Wears Prada with Meryl Streep, looked just amazingone of the many reasons we featured her in our December issue (Seven Reasons Anne Hathaway Rocks). Whenever Im depressed, she confided with a smile, I pull out that story and I say, Yes! Thats why gay men love me! Thats why Im fabulous! And she is indeed! We got to chat with McMurtrys cowriter, Diana Ossana, who looked stunning in her M Siamo gown. I felt my blood pressure rise 50 times, she admitted when we asked how she felt when hearing Brokeback won Best Screenplay. My heart burst out of my chest. I had no idea when I read that short story in 1997 I thought if we did it right, it would make a wonderful film. But I never dreamed it would be embraced the way its been. Ossana told us shes had friends from all walks of life go see the movie and love it. I dont like being preached to, so I would never write a story that would do that. As we walked through the room, we spiedamong othersEric Bana, Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Phillippe, Nathan Lane, Michelle Williams, Heath Ledger, Ziyi Zhang, Peter Jackson, Dominic Monahan, Evangeline Lilly, Keira Knightley, Rachel Weisz, Zach Braff, Mandy Moore, Debra Messing, Colin Hanks, Jill Hennessey, Matt Dillon, Patrick Dempsey, Jane Seymour, Mel Brooks, and winner Steve Carrell, who graciously did interview after interview while his fellow Office castmates boogeyed on the dance floor. We learned Adrien Brody brought Simon Rex as his well, were not going to say it was a date. Rex stayed mostly to himself while Brody chatted with Lost castmates Lilly and Monahan. Hilariously, Britney Spearss first husband, Jason Alexander (you know, the one she married for five minutes), was there hoping someone would take his picture. Sorry, boy, were not interested. One person notably absent was Jake Gyllenhaal, who didnt attend the awards or the party. I think hes filming a movie, one rep told me. Um I dont know why hes not here, another said uncomfortably. Hey, we know Jake (our October cover boy) has been incredibly supportive of Brokebackwe just wanted to see those dreamy eyes. We headed outside, where smokers were huddled under heat lamps to keep warm in the chill night. It was there we were able to congratulate winner Ang Lee, as we interrupted his dinner. Ever gracious, he told us hearing his name was a great feeling. My mind was racingso much adrenaline. I wanted to embrace everyone at the table. We noted his speech, which acknowledged the many good films of the year, was refreshingly humble. I think its very important to show appreciation for all the filmmakers. A class act all the way. And with that, we let him get back to his sushi! Before we headed out, we ran into our pal Jerry Penacoli, from Extra. We were curious who his favorite person on the red carpet was. George Clooney, he told us. Hes always so self-deprecating. Im so happy he won tonight. And Jerry was happy with the way things went all around. The fact that Brokeback swept the night, thats something to be excited about. Ang said, All I want is for more people to see this movie. He was almost in shock, but then he told me, Were definitely expecting something Oscar morning. Were expecting it too! We were thinking of heading to the Weinstein Companys party at Trader Vics, but remembered that despite putting Transamerica leading lad Kevin Zegers on our January cover, we werent invited to the bash. Hey, were not too bitter. Luckily, we werent alone; the movies Calpernia Addams (who interviewed Globe winner Felicity Huffman for our December issue) and Andrea James were left off the guest list as well. I guess our tickets were lost in the mail, chirped the always good-natured Addams without a drop of malice, when we called to see if she was going. Gotta love her. Besides, shes cohosting with Reichen Lehmkuhl on his Q Television show all week, so she already had plans. Instead, we headed off to HBOs poolside soiree, where a ring of fire burning over the water greeted guests. We walked in alongside the newest Superman, Brandon Routh, who looked pretty damn super. Jeremy Piven, Kevin Dillion, and other Entourage castmates huddled under the heat lamps, and we saw even more Lost cast members mingling, including the ultra-sexy Matthew Fox, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Harold Perrineau.Paris Hilton buzzed into the party for about three minutes (before apparently realizing HBO actually makes quality entertainment), and we brushed past Jane Kaczmarek, Chloe Sevigny, Alfre Woodard, winner Mary-Louise Parker, and Rosario Dawson who was with her hunky boyfriend, Jason Lewis. We ran into our September cover guy, Jesse L. Martin, who somehow got hold of a statue. Im the guardian, he cracked before telling us it was his pal S. Epatha Merkersons trophy (which she earned for Lackawanna Blues). Martin, who isnt a big fan of Los Angeles, was kind enough to accompany his Law & Order costar out west for the celebration. I cant wait to get back! he cracked. We let him know how much we loved Rent. Im so proud of it, he beamed. And next up, hes looking forward to a vacationmaybe Brazil. After all those parties, we could use a vacation too.
