Thanks to all the gay men and women who were brave enough to come out and live their life. On January 17, 2007 at 2 : 58 PM
schmed'scomment is: I can think of two more when Dustin Hoffman and Julie Andrews were nominated for playing the other gender in Tootsie and Victor/Victoria. Victor/Victoria was one of the gayest movies ever really. On January 17, 2007 at 4 : 19 PM
Bill'scomment is: Just a small quibble, the stage musical "Kiss of the Spider Woman" was adapted directly from the Manuel Puig novel, not from the film which was also adapted from the book. Of note the musical was written by John Kander and Fred Ebb with book by Terrence McNally. On January 17, 2007 at 5 : 45 PM
Urzila'scomment is: I love the list. Very interesting. Must say I totally respect what Charlize Theron is doing/saying that she will not get married unless gays/lesbians can also legally get married. Hats off to the girl. Wonder if she knows it is now legal to get married in South Africa. Been legal for about a month. South African girls rock. On January 17, 2007 at 8 : 12 PM
Andrea'scomment is: I think Ellen hosting the emmys is awesome! She is a great person, a talented talk show host and comediene, and all around rocks. (plus, she has a totally hot girifriend). Needless to say, I can't wait to watch her host the Emmys. Go Ellen!!! On January 18, 2007 at 1 : 00 AM
Parker'scomment is: What about Tom Cruise for playing straight men so well? On January 18, 2007 at 8 : 18 AM
Dean Morris'scomment is: I don't know if that streaker with the moustache was gay (David Niven had one too) but for me it's close enough. On January 18, 2007 at 2 : 56 PM
Dean Morris'scomment is: BTW don't forget about Merchant and Ivory and Geffen and Oz. On January 18, 2007 at 2 : 59 PM
Henry'scomment is: How about Joan Crawford and Bette Davis at the Academy Awards? My favorite war story took place in 1962, when Bette Davis was nominated for Best Actress, while her What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? costar Joan Crawford was not. Crawford, so the story goes, hatched a plan. Anne Bancroft, also nominated for Best Actress (for The Miracle Worker), couldn't attend the ceremonies. If Bancroft were to win, Crawford offered to accept the Oscar on her behalf. Sure enough, on the big night, when Bancroft was announced as the winner, Crawford brushed past Davis and snapped, "Excuse me, I have an Oscar to accept." On January 18, 2007 at 3 : 07 PM
Randman'scomment is: Great list - funny and incisive. Unfortunately, "Travelin' Thru losing to Pimp" also reminded me of the vow I'd made after last year's slapdown of "Brokeback" to never support or watch the Academy Awards again. On January 18, 2007 at 3 : 21 PM
Doug Johnson'scomment is: Thank you for the illuminating list. I see I missed more Award shows than I knew. I won't let that happen again. I love Parkere's comment about Tom Cruise. On January 18, 2007 at 3 : 49 PM
Robert'scomment is: Let's add the fact that composer Stephen Sondheim won the Oscar for "Sooner or Later" and had a little something to do with 1961's multi award winning "West Side Story" - along with Leonard Bernstein, Jerome Robbins and Arthur Laurents. On January 18, 2007 at 4 : 26 PM
Max'scomment is: Bruce Davison nominated for AIDS drama,"Longtime Companion"(1990), Out playwright Edward Albee's masterpice "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" gets multiple nominations and acting wins for Elizabeth Taylor and Sandy Dennis(1966), Greg Kinnear gets supporting actor nom for playing Jack Nicholson's gay neighbor in "As Good As It Gets"(1997), and with all the Kander & Ebb references, how can we not include "Cabaret"(1972)!! On January 18, 2007 at 5 : 10 PM
Stephen'scomment is: Parker's comment about Mr. Cruise made me laugh out loud...too funny!! On January 18, 2007 at 6 : 15 PM
Matt'scomment is: This list is terrific, and it brought back some great memories. What could and SHOULD have been one of the gayest moments would've been Terence Stamp nominated and then winning for Best Supporting Actor in PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT in 1994. His performance is brilliant and him not getting nominated is one of the biggest, gayest slights in Oscar history. On January 18, 2007 at 6 : 17 PM
Lonnie'scomment is: Great list but also don't forget those hot, famous Tennessee Williams films including 1958: "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" with 6 nominations ("Auntie Mame" and "Bell, Book & Candle" also nominated); 1959: "Suddenly Last Summer" (along with "Some Like it Hot" nominated for 6 oscars) and in 1962 "Lawrence of Arabia" won 7 oscars. Stanley Kubrick and Otto Preminger were bypassed for several oscars but left a legacy of awesome films. On January 19, 2007 at 4 : 24 AM
Lonnie'scomment is: To Out Editors - apologies! Please delete the last sentence of my comments sent earlier re Kubrick and Preminger - That was incomplete research and is not accurate for publication. Thanks!!!!!! On January 19, 2007 at 7 : 10 AM
pat mario'scomment is: great list...ofcourse the best to me was brokeback. i'm just so sad that so many of our gay brothers didn't get to see the ground breaking movie because of aids On January 19, 2007 at 11 : 46 AM
Thumper'scomment is: Good going everyone! Just thought of another one -kind of obvious so now I'm wondering if maybe someone already mentioned it, and I missed it: Tom Hanks winning Best Actor in 1993 for his gay role in Philadelphia! The film also won Best Song. Also, worth mentioning, I think, many people thought, at the time, that Paris is Burning should at least have been nominated in the Documentary category... Thomas'scomment is: Parker's comment on Tommy-boy: May I nominate you for an oscar for this.. you pick the catagory! *smile* On January 19, 2007 at 1 : 17 PM
Jay'scomment is: Great idea here, execution wasn't so great though. I agree with all of the mentioned omissions before me. There are at least two statements as for as time goes. Cher wore the outrageous mowhawked, black outfit as a reaction to her not being nominated for MASK in 1986, you list this as 1984 when she was nominated for SILKWOOD. Unless Ian McKellen brought his NZ bf to the oscars the year after he was nominated for LOTR then you are right, otherwise McKellen in 2002, CHICAGO in 2003. On January 20, 2007 at 5 : 39 AM
Francisco'scomment is: I thinks that it is very brave for people to come out. But at the same time I would say.... live your life to the fullest... it doesn't care what people say, what matters is how you feel. I feel very proud being a gay ma. and Loving It. On January 20, 2007 at 3 : 57 PM
Peter'scomment is: Re: schmed's comment above. In 1983, Liza Minelli was one of the co-hosts of the award show. As mentioned above, both Dustin Hoffman and Julie Andrews were nominated for playing characters of the opposite gender. Robert Preston was nominated for best supporting actor for playing an openly gay man in "Victor/Victoria", and John Lithgow was nominated in the same category for playing a transsexual in "The World According to Garp". That has to "outgay" one of your top 25! On January 21, 2007 at 10 : 40 AM
Tommy'scomment is: OH MY GOD...Madonna was simply stunning and gorgeous that night at the Oscars!!!!! She and Micheal Jackson went together that particular night, and were the topic of the evening, even moreso than the awards. She sang the heck out of Sooner Or Later, and my friends and I loved her trembling hands....shows she is a mere human being and always a great friend to the Gay and Lesbian and Bisexual and of course, Transexual communities around the globe. Thanks Madonna for everything you've contributed through the years...... On January 22, 2007 at 8 : 25 PM
Omar'scomment is: Does anyone remember 1993 nominated for Best Foreign Film & Best cinematography chinese epic "Farewell My Concubine"? I certainly do remember this 50 year long love story. On January 27, 2007 at 3 : 43 AM
