Silence Is a Four-Letter Word: On Art and Deafness
Raymond Luczak
Tactile Mind  $18

New York–based author Raymond Luczak carries a couple of different labels: He’s deaf, and he’s gay. Essentially, though, Luczak is an artist, as he proclaims again and again in this spirited defense of art as identity. Written in the form of quick bursts of opinion arrived at over his many years as a poet, playwright, and filmmaker, Luczak seeks to shake deaf artists out of the cages built by the hearing world. He’s certainly not shy about the strong views he has developed over his lifetime as a writer and filmmaker, and there are plenty of opinions to argue with in this volume. Yet Luczak calls for us to ask important questions of ourselves. Emily Drabinski
