Queer Filmmaker Explores Sexual Similarities Between Porn & Fashion in Trippy Micro-Short

Ryon

The brief, voyeuristic clip studies Los Angeles model Ryon Wu.

Having previously worked as an editor for adult entertainment site Cockyboys, New York-based filmmaker Andy Boyce challenged himself to explore the sexual similarities between porn and fashion through his experimental new micro-short, Ryon.

The 30-second clip, trimmed down for an Instagram generation, stars queer Los Angeles model Ryon Wu, set against the subject's own manic underground track, "Acid." Much like editing a porn scene, Boyce's short is deeply voyeuristic, capturing Wu downing an entire banana, writhing in a rose-lit bathtub and soaping his "Faggot" chest tattoo--but unlike porn, everything is wildly off-kilter, shots spliced together like bits of memories from a faded night out.

"Fashion and porn both focus on sensuality of the body, but the difference is porn is blatant with sex, while fashion tends to be more tongue-in-cheek, 'winky face' about it," Boyce said. "With my past in porn editing with Cockyboys, I found a tendency to be heavy-handed with shots that were blatantly sexual in the first drafts. But with Ryon's input, I was able to find creative ways to tone down the sexual factor."

Boyce first met Ryon during New York Fashion Week, and "was immediately taken with his strong sense of self, despite his young age." He added that his "Instagram is a great place to see documentation of his unique self-expression and creativity. When the filmmaker visited LA this month, they captured this visual, creating "a free-flowing study of Ryon as a muse." Watch, below.
