QI was reading your column from the October 2005 issue of Out. Someone wrote in about continuing to go to the baths and wondering about compulsive sexual behavior. Among other things, you said he could try a Sexaholics Anonymous meeting. I was really surprised to hear you recommend Sexaholics Anonymous. Just FYI, there are several 12-step sexual recovery programs out there and Sexaholics Anonymous is probably the least gay-friendly. Sexaholics Anonymous defines sobriety for its members as sex in a heterosexual marriage between a man and a woman. Gay men/women can attend and become sober as long as they are abstaining from sex. I know for me as a gay man, I wouldn’t feel real comfortable at a Sexaholics Anonymous meeting. Sexual Compulsives Anonymous is a 12-step fellowship made up primarily of gay men/women—it doesn’t get any more gay-friendly. Sex Addicts Anonymous, also 12-step, is also very gay-friendly. I hope this helps.
AThank you. Several readers have passed along that information, and I have forwarded it to the writer of the original letter. I am very grateful to have the information—thank God for my knowledgeable readers!
